Audi mcnish crash into ferrari

McNish, who lines up with Audi’s senior crew on Saturday, is widely considered the best sports car driver in the world. But at the age of 41 he has only two victories to show for his talent and endeavours in the fabled endurance race and admits he craves more.

Now that ambition has been undermined by partner Tom Kristensen’s heavy crash moments before the end of the final qualifying session.

The Dane, who has a record eight wins in the event, was unhurt but only the monocoque of the new Audi R18 coupe survived the high-speed impact. Even the engine has been replaced.

The car – to be shared also by Italian Dindo Capello – will have only a brief run in warm-up before the start of the race.

McNish said: “Tom’s accident was unfortunate, but these things can happen when you are pushing. We know the R18 has pure pace and performance and hopefully we’ll be able to take on the opposition.
